The mighty Shenandoah Valley

If you travel just south of the state of Pennsylvania, you’ll discover at about this same time, a group of potters (quite a few of them actually) which flourished throughout most of the 19th century. They were found in a region that stretched roughly 100 miles along the Shenandoah Valley.

Among the leaders of this group were members of the Bell family. The patriarch, Peter Bell, began making pottery beginning in 1800 and continued until 1845. He produced pieces in such various cities as Hagerstown, Maryland and Winchester, Virginia.

His eldest son, John Bell, continued in his father’s footsteps working from 1833 until 1880 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He was followed by five sons who continued the tradition up until the end of the century.

If that’s not enough, John’s brothers, Sameal and Solomon also entered the family business. They were in partnership, in fact, from 1833 in Strasburg, Virginia. The factory they founded ran until 1908.
